For day 2, we got the Lincoln out on the track for a few more laps. With all eight cylinders, we beat the Day 1 best lap time with 1:55.113. Two whole seconds faster than Day 1. However, the clutch cable started to go on the Lincoln. Rather than risk damage to a real contender, we played it safe and brought it in to the paddock. Then we focused ALL our efforts on the Rocketbird.
The Rocketbird was plauged with heat problems, even after the installation of an electric water pump. We tried heater core connections and that didn't work. Then we got the pump installed on the lower radiator hose, and that seemed to work. After a quick lap around the paddock to check for temp issues, we headed for the track.
At with only 15 minutes left of racing, the Rocketbird merged into the track and headed for the s-curves. Through the caroousel, the wheels were trying hard to fly out of the banked turn. We one good lap (98% of lap two), and then the checkered flag came out. At that point, the lower radiator hose had failed, there may have been oil leaking, but we got the Rocketbird on the track.
For all the efforts of the team, we were awarded the "I got screwed" award. The award was given to the team, but not Jeff, since after all the hours of toil, Jeff was the only one to get a lap in.
A Day 2 video should be available in the next few days. |
